The public works director is responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, and coordinating, on a day to day basis, the work and personnel of the town's public works department including street maintenance and repair, street sign installation and maintenance, water pipe system repair and maintenance, sewer system construction, general maintenance and repair, landscaping and installation and repair of catch basins and manholes, building maintenance, water supply systems, and overseeing sanitation and recycling.
The primary responsibility in managing the Water System is to ensure that the citizens of the town have an adequate supply of water, and that the water is maintained at a high quality level.
The primary responsibility in managing the wastewater system is to ensure that the wastewater produced by the Town of Lake Lure is properly treated according to state and federal requirements. The utilities department is responsible for taking test samples daily of wastewater at various locations. These samples are laboratory tested by the department and also sends test samples to an outside lab for analysis. The utilities department also prepares reports and filings for various regulatory agencies.
Other responsibilities include water system chemical monitoring, supervising water meter readers, and supervising lake-dredging operations.

The public works director confers with the town manager with respect to short and long-range public works facilities, projects, and work programs; assists with the preparation of specifications for the purchase of public works materials, and equipment; and develops material and cost estimates.
