The Town of Lake Lure’s Utilities Department is responsible for the water system, the hydroelectric system, and the wastewater system. The primary responsibility in managing the Water System is to ensure that the citizens of the town have an adequate supply of water, and that the water is maintained at a high quality level.

The primary responsibility in managing the hydroelectric system is to maximize electricity generation while controlling the level of Lake Lure. The staff monitors the watersheds of the lake and determining when to open the floodgates of the dam and when to operate the second electricity-producing turbine.   In addition, the utilities department is responsible for the maintenance of the hydroelectric plant including the scheduling of heavy maintenance of the plant and dam. The department is responsible for all bids and contracts concerning the hydroelectric plant and dam operations.

The primary responsibility in managing the wastewater system is to ensure that the wastewater produced by the Town of Lake Lure is properly treated according to state and federal requirements. The utilities department is responsible for taking test samples daily of wastewater at various locations. These samples are laboratory tested by the department and also sends test samples to an outside lab for analysis.    The utilities department also prepares reports and filings for various regulatory agencies.
