Steve Wheeler has served as Town Manager since January 2008, after serving the past 7 years as Town Manager at Holden Beach. Steve brings with him a great deal of knowledge and expertise in resort community and infrastructure management.
The mayor and board of commissioners (town council) appoint the town manager for an indefinite term. The Town of Lake Lure operates under the council-manager form of government. Under this system, the town manager serves as chief administrative officer of the town and is responsible for the efficient administration of all town operations and departments. He is responsible for carrying out the policies of the town and ordinances adopted by the town council. As Chief administrative officer, the manager is empowered to make all personnel appointments, supervise the work all town departments, enforce the laws and ordinances of the town, supervise preparation of the annual operating budget for own council approval, and oversee the day to day business of the town.
The following departments report directly to the Town Manager:
- Finance
- Fire and Emergency Management
- Police
The town manager attends all meetings of the town council with the right to take part in discussions, but without the right to vote, and is responsible for making recommendations to the board as may be deemed necessary or expedient for the benefit of the public.
The town manager makes reports to the town council about the affairs of the town and keeps them fully advised of the Town’s financial condition and future financial needs.
The town manager’s office is located in the municipal center/town hall. Office hours are 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
