Municipal Golf Course
The town’s municipal golf course is closed for the foreseeable future. It closed in November 2011 following news that our management vendor, Course Doctors, went out of business. Minimal maintenance and preservation of the greens will continue until town council finalizes a new operating strategy.
Town council and citizens must decide the best course of utilization for this town asset. Some options discussed thus far include: finding another professional operator interested in our course and pay them this subsidy. A second option is to re-purpose the course for another use. Ideas submitted include a public park with walking paths, a permanent campus for the school, athletic fields, a conference facility, a relocated public works building or some combination of all of these.
While there are no cost-free options, golf is a particularly expensive and chemical-intensive use of the land. Just since the 1980s, the town has invested over $4 million to run the course. If this investment is to continue, we must collectively and carefully evaluate the return to the community and taxpayers.
You’re encouraged to contact your town council members to express your opinions about the future of the golf course
