Number of Internet Service Providers to Lake Lure & Chimney Rock Village Expands

In many places around Western North Carolina, where high speed Internet is as expected as indoor air conditioning, a headline regarding expansion of service isn't much of an attention grabber.

Here at home, however, residents and local businesses are well aware of the limited speed and availability of Internet and cell service. To know that those services could be faster, more widely available, and affordable, is indeed news.

Over the last year, the Town of Lake Lure, the Utilities Advisory Board, and the Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge have worked collaboratively with area providers to improve and expand service offerings.

Recently, representatives from Pangaea, Point Broadband, and Telrad Networks made a presentation to the Lake Lure Utilities Advisory Board concerning their desire to expand into Lake Lure as well as other areas of Rutherford County and Polk County.

They chose Lake Lure to serve as the pilot program for their expansion into North Carolina.

As a result, the Town of Lake Lure will assist Point Broadband in allowing them to utilize the water tower along North Carolina Highway 9 as a broadband deployment site. The town will assist Point Broadband in identifying two additional broadcast locations as well.

Headquartered in West Point, Ga., Point Broadband provides services in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and now North Carolina.

Point Broad offers connection speeds of 10 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up in order to meet the needs of most users.  Other speeds up to 1 Gbps will be offered and prices will vary based on the level of service wanted.
