“Move Over” Law

Despite the fact that the "Move Over" law took effect in 2002, some North Carolina residents say that they have never heard of the law. The North Carolina statute requires that when you see a police or other emergency vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway, you should move over or immediately slow down as you travel by.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol stated that people are just not moving over, but rather are looking at the scene activities and wrecking or colliding with someone else. This is why the "Move Over" law went into effect in 2002. The law requires that motorists move over one lane away from any law enforcement or emergency vehicle that is parked on the shoulder of the roadway.
