Nov. 9, 2pm Update to Party Rock Fire at Lake Lure

Nov. 9, 2016 Update Party Rock Fire at Lake Lure

Lake Lure, NC: (2 pm) - In an ongoing battle to contain the forest fire at Party Rock that broke out Nov. 5th, the NC Forestry Service reports that there has been no loss of structures. However, due to changing wind conditions, additional standby evacuation notices have gone out in the previously identified areas of Rumbling Bald Resort.

A map of the area shows a yellow line around all areas that have received a standby notice of potential need to evacuate. All residents in those areas have already been alerted.  If the fire line is breached, those residents will be evacuated.

If evacuations take place, residents will need to leave immediately. Please begin preparations now by getting together personal possessions, including medications, important documents and pets.  Temporary housing for evacuees will be arranged through Rumbling Bald Resort by calling 828.694.3046.

Due to changing weather conditions, increased winds and very challenging topography,  sections of the wildfire continue to spread northwest on Rumbling Bald Mountain.

The fire, now in its fifth day is over 400 acres and is 30 percent contained.

“Today we’re working with increased winds, gusting up to 30 mph, with relative humidity of 36,” said Victoria Tillotson, NC Forest Service Public Information Officer for the Party Rock Fire. “One of the factors hampering this fires is the dryness of the fuel. With no rain for so long and no real potential for rain, conditions remain extremely dry.”

The priority now is to continue structure protection and to maintain containment lines around the fire. Dozers are constructing lines on the north side of the fire to further secure the threatened community of Rumbling Bald Resort.

Lake Lure Fire Department continues to lead the structure protection plan. There are 20 fire engines, with four man crews assigned to protect structures. Dozer lines were constructed around some of the furthest out residences and then burnout operations were conducted to create a safe “black” around the properties.

Some of the activity today will focus on maintaining the existing containment lines that were previously installed at the beginning of the fire. Those lines are being maintained due to the wind conditions. Leaves that are falling off the trees could compromise the integrity of the containment lines.

This will be a continuous process until all leaves fall from the trees or the area receives substantial rain.

As for the additional evacuations in the Quail Ridge area and Huntington Road area, crews are notifying residents door-to-door. Rumbling Bald Resort is continuing to coordinate temporary housing for Resort residents. No other evacuations have been ordered at this time.

Lastly, the NC Forest Service and local fire crews have been overwhelmed by and grateful for the outpouring of donations of food, snacks and beverages since the fire broke out.

“We have such a generous and caring community,” said Lake Lure Town Manager Ron Nalley. “However, the crews indicate that they are pretty well stocked up at this time and no other donations are necessary.”
