Lake Lure & the City of Asheville to Partner on a Bid for
the 2014 Ironman Competition

The Town of Lake Lure - home of the Lake Lure Triathlon,  Race to the Rock, and the 2013 Dixie Zone USMS Open Water Championship - is one of 84 communities in the Southeast invited to bid on a full Ironman race for 2014.

Just being invited to bid is impressive by any measure, as there are only nine full Ironman events held in the United States.
The Ironman competition is a major, multi-day event. With minimum requirements of 2,000 volunteers and lodging for at least 2,500 athletes, officials from both communities believe that the best option exists in leveraging the unique and strengths and assets found in abundance in each town.

"Lake Lure is incredibly honored to be considered for a full Ironman, and the benefits of hosting this event are tremendous," said Lake Lure Town Manager Chris Braund who is also an avid triathlete.  "We would be remiss if we didn't seriously evaluate the possibilities of this rare opportunity."

Benefits for hosting an Ironman event include national and international exposure of 6.5 billion impressions (2012 figures), 5,000 - 10,000 area visitors, and an estimated $9- $15 million in direct economic impact.

Because of the high event demands, like lodging needs and event space, the Town of Lake Lure plans to partner with the City of Asheville on the bid proposal.

Lake Lure is no stranger to major athletic events having recently hosted the first overnight stop for Cycle North Carolina's 2012 Fall Ride, which brought in more than 1,000 cyclists and their guests.  In addition, 2013 marks the ninth year of our Lake Lure Olympiad Sports Festival, which attracts more than 1,500 athletes plus visitors, and features three days of athletic events for all ages and abilities.    For more information about the Ironman competition, visit their website
