Marine Commission Meeting Summary

Thank you for joining us for the Town of Lake Lure Marine Commission Meeting & Public Hearing on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. 

The meeting was held on The Lakeside Terrace at Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure, 153 Mountains Blvd. Lake Lure, NC 28746. 

The public was invited to attend the meeting. 

The following is a summary of the meeting for those who were unable to attend.  These are not the official meeting minutes which will be included in the next quarterly meeting packet. 

I. Call to Order

 

Mayor Pritchett called the meeting to order and thanked attendees for joining the meeting.

II. Public Hearing

A. Resolution No. 25-06-10 Amending the Lake Use Regulations: 

 

RESOLUTION NO. 2-0- OF THE TOWN OF LAKE LURE MARINE COMMISSION AMENDING THE LAKE USE REGULATIONS

WHEREAS, the Lake Lure Town Council has created the Lake Lure Marine Commission as authorized by special act of the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina for the purposes of regulating all activities on Lake Lure; and

WHEREAS, the Lake Use Regulations were adopted by resolution on March 9, 2004; and WHEREAS, the Lake Advisory Board comprehensively reviewed the entirety of the Lake Use Regulations and recommended various amendments.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LAKE LURE MARINE COMMISSION that the following revisions to the Lake Use Regulations are hereby placed in effect and shall be enforced by the Town of Lake Lure: [Words stricken through to be deleted, words underlined to be added]

SECTION ONE. The Lake Use Regulations are hereby amended, as presented on the following pages:

     i. Staff Report: Parks, Recreation, and Lake Director Dana Bradley presented Resolution No. 25-06-10 Amending Lake Use Regulations. The following is a summary of the changes that were presented and highlighted in the meeting packet: 

  • Page 8 of the Lake Use Regulations involves removing the weight limit of boats. The word "Weight is removed. The weight of the vessel does not have a significant impact here.
  • Page 9: restricts transferring boat permits only if it is owned by the same person. This clarifies that boat permits do not transfer with the boat if sold.  Verbiage was added to clarify that boat permits and letter R was added to once sold
  • Page 12: 1) is a reiteration of removing the weight limit
  • Page 12: 2) item # 6 adds the word "boats" for clarification. 4.03A #4. was removed because it was related to #6.
  • Page 13: 404F. Rephrased a sentence to clarify the Lake Advisory Board's (LAB) role. 
  • Page 14: 1) added language allowing digital copies of licenses.  405 A.  Added a sentence on the boaters license.
  • Page 14: 2) changes the "no wake" hours to “hours of darkness.’
  • Page 26: fines being added, changing the fine to a class "D" fine for removing buoys. A class "D" fine is a $1,500 fine. 

     ii. Public Hearing: The meeting was opened to the public for comment:

  • Kathie Hatfield from 125 Falcon Way suggested that the hours be from Sunrise to Sunset and not include the 30 minutes window. She also advised that the moving of buoys is also in the zoning and should be removed.

     iii. Commission Deliberation: There was a brief discussion.

   iv. Consideration for Adoption of Resolution No. 25-06-10 Amending the Lake Use Regulations. Marine Commission approved Resolution No. 25-06-10 amending the Lake Use Regulations with additional edits to changing the no wake to “From Sunset to Sunrise”.  

 

IV. Public Comment:

 

The public is invited to speak on any non-agenda and/or consent agenda topics. Comments should be limited to less than three minutes.
