Lake Lure Fire Department is actively providing mutual aid in response to the woods fire threatening structures atop Shumont Mountain.

At this time, the majority of the fire activity is located in Buncombe County.

Please keep all residents, first responders, and agencies involved in your thoughts and prayers as they work diligently to protect lives, property, and our surrounding communities.

Update on the Shumont Mountain Fire 1/1/26 8:00 AM

 

Lake Lure Fire Department continues to provide mutual aid with this situation, as the majority of fire activity is occurring in Buncombe County. We are pleased to report that all homes remain secure. 

Fire crews have done an outstanding job establishing containment lines and successfully stopping the fire’s progression.

We extend our sincere thanks to the crews who worked overnight in very cold conditions to fight the fire and protect the community.

Update on the Shumont Mountain Fire 1/1/26 at 10AM

 

Although the majority of fire has been in Buncombe County, areas of Rutherford County have been impacted in the Chimney Rock Fire district and the Broad River Fire Department is assisting. Lake Lure Fire Department is providing mutual aid.

We extend our sincere thanks to the crews who worked overnight in very cold conditions to fight the fire and protect the community.

 

Update on the Shumont Mountain Fire 1/1/26 at 3PM

 

The Shumont Mountain Fire has impacted approximately 20¼ acres. There have been no evacuations, no reported injuries, and no structures are involved at this time.

Fire crews have achieved just over 50% containment. Multiple firefighting crews remain on scene and are actively working to contain and resolve the fire.

Further updates will be provided as conditions change.

Update on the Shumont Mountain Fire 1/1/26 at 7:00PM

There have been no evacuations, no reported injuries,  and no structures are involved at this time. Shumont Mountain Fire Update: There have been no evacuations, no reported injuries,  and no structures are involved at this time.

The climbing and hiking areas located off Boys Camp Road have not been affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by the North Carolina Forestry Service.

 

Update on the Shumont Mountain Fire 1/2/26 at 11:00 AM

 

The fire previously referred to as the Shumont/Lake Lure Fire is officially listed as the Haircomb Gap Fire. The NC Forest Service managed the fire through the night and has maintained 50% containment. Fire remains at 20.25 acres. NC Forest Service has assumed operation and no local fire units are currently on site. There have been no evacuations and structures are no longer threatened at this time. We will continue to post updates as they are available.
