Lake Lure Refill Update - March 9, 2026

Lake Lure at 982 MSL

Lake Lure is currently at 982 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL), which is 8.5 feet below full pond (990.5 MSL).

The lake began refilling on February 6, 2026, when the water level measured 974.2 MSL. The photos below were taken from the same location in Morse Park, facing east over the main channel. These photos show the visible progress that has been made since the refilling began.

A Careful and Managed Process

Refilling Lake Lure is a slow and carefully managed operation. For safety and environmental protection, water levels cannot be raised more than approximately one foot per day. Progress will continue to depend heavily on rainfall and weather conditions.

Lake Status

The Town of Lake Lure and local businesses remain open and warmly welcome visitors. However, the lake itself remains closed to all unauthorized personnel during this recovery period to ensure public safety.

Debris Removal Underway

Lake Lure’s Public Works crews have been working hard this past week to remove debris from the shoreline.

This work could only begin recently as the lake levels have risen. Over the past several months the Town maintained the lake at a significantly lower level to allow for critical infrastructure improvements at the dam. During that time, water levels were too low for boats to safely and effectively navigate the shoreline to collect debris. Following the completion of this work in February 2026, Town officials began gradually raising the lake level.

We appreciate the community’s patience as these essential infrastructure improvements were completed. Now we are working toward restoring normal lake operations.

The North Carolina State Mission Assigned Recovery Task (SMART) Program contractors are on site now working to remove debris. Their crews are removing debris that may have entered the lake from the shoreline using large barges and skimmers capable of capturing floating debris.

Initial efforts will focus on debris within approximately five feet of the shoreline, with additional passes planned as conditions allow to address areas farther up the banks. Debris is temporarily placed behind the Fire Station for sorting.

Soil and Water Quality

Note that soil tests and heavy metal tests were completely following Hurricane Helene and the results were all negative. Town officials continue to take water samples each week and the results are within normal limits.

Reopening Outlook

Town officials will announce reopening dates as soon as a confirmed timeline becomes available. We are pleased to report that water quality is within normal limits. Details are available at the link below.

At this time, there is hope that Lake Lure and Lake Lure Beach may reopen by Memorial Weekend in May 2026. If the lake refills more quickly than anticipated, that timeline may be adjusted.
