Special Weather Statement - Beware of Black Ice

Beware of Black Ice

Town of Lake Lure crews have plowed all town maintained roads multiple times today.  Some town roads are in shady areas and it will take time, sun, and warmth to melt the ice.  Crews will continue to make rounds on Wednesday, 1/28/26 to plow town roads.

The National Weather Service has issued the following Special Weather Statement:

PATCHY BLACK ICE AGAIN TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY MORNING

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing again by 8 PM this evening, after which lingering runoff from melted snow and sleet will refreeze on untreated roads. Patchy black ice can be expected once again tonight through Wednesday morning, especially in spots that are normally shady. Icy patches will remain until temperatures can warm above freezing in the late morning hours on Wednesday. If traveling late tonight and Wednesday morning, be prepared for slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses and any untreated roadways. Use extra caution when walking on sidewalks, driveways, and in parking lots.

Temperatures will remain very cold through the weekend. A reinforcing cold front will bring the threat of very low wind chills again on Wednesday night and Thursday night. A strong arctic front may bring the coldest weather of the season this weekend. This prolonged period of cold temperatures will be especially dangerous due to the possibility of extended power outages remaining from the storm that affected the region this past weekend.
