Town of Lake Lure Begins Refilling the Lake following Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts

Lake Lure, NC — February 6, 2026 — The Town of Lake Lure officially began refilling Lake Lure on February 6, 2026, marking the first step toward restoring the lake to full pond (990.5 Mean Sea Level) since the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene.  This achievement represents extraordinary progress made possible through unprecedented collaboration with FEMA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, AshBritt Environmental, Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure, and countless contractors, crews, and local partners who worked tirelessly through immense challenges.

“Thanks to the dedication of so many, we have witnessed progress that many believed was impossible,” said Mayor Carol Pritchett. “Our lake — our namesake, our refuge, and our economic lifeline — is coming back stronger than ever.”

Water Quality Confirmed Within Normal Limits

The Town is pleased to report that comprehensive water quality testing confirms all results remain within normal limits, ensuring the lake is safe as it returns to its vital role in the community.  You may review Lake Lure's Water Quality Results.

Refilling Lake Lure will be a Gradual Process

Town officials emphasize that refilling Lake Lure will be a slow and carefully managed process. The lake level cannot be raised by more than approximately one foot per day, and progress will depend heavily on rainfall and weather conditions.

“Today is an extremely important step forward in our recovery,” Mayor Pritchett noted. “While we cannot yet confirm exactly when the lake will return to full pond, this marks a major turning point for Lake Lure.” Although the Town cannot guarantee a timeline, it is hoped the lake may be able to reopen for public use by Memorial Weekend 2026, depending on conditions.

Fishery Recovery Remains a Priority

While the lake’s refilling is a major milestone, the Town recognizes recoverable impacts to Lake Lure’s fishery. Ongoing habitat improvements are underway, and long-term ecological recovery will continue to be guided by years of professional fishery studies. A New Chapter for Lake Lure

The refilling of Lake Lure is more than an operational milestone — it is a symbol of resilience, recovery, and the strength of partnership. The Town looks forward to welcoming residents, visitors, and future generations back to a restored lake that remains central to the heart of this community.
