Message from the Mayor - Lake Lure is Coming Back – Together We Rise!
Lake Lure is Coming Back – Together We Rise!
February 6, 2026 marked an important and hopeful milestone for our community. I am pleased to share that the Town of Lake Lure officially began refilling Lake Lure the lake on this date — the first step toward restoring the lake to full pond level (990.5 Mean Sea Level) since the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene.
This achievement represents extraordinary progress made possible through unprecedented collaboration with FEMA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, AshBritt Environmental, Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure, and countless contractors, crews, and local partners who have worked tirelessly through immense challenges.
Thanks to the dedication of so many, we have witnessed progress that many believed was impossible. Our lake - our namesake, our refuge, and our economic lifeline is coming back stronger than ever!
Water Quality Confirmed Within Normal Limits
The Town of Lake Lure continues to regularly test and closely monitor water quality following Hurricane Helene. Comprehensive testing confirms that all results remain within normal limits, confirming that the lake is safe for public use.
You may review the weekly Water quality results here.
A Carefully Managed Refill Process
Refilling Lake Lure will be a slow and carefully managed process. The lake level cannot be raised by more than approximately one foot per day, and progress will depend heavily on rainfall and weather conditions. As of this date, the lake level is 980 Mean Sea Level (MSL), just 10.5 feet below full pond which is 990.5 MSL.
While we cannot yet confirm exactly when the lake will return to full pond, beginning the refill marked a major turning point for Lake Lure. Although the Town cannot guarantee a timeline, we are hopeful the lake may be able to reopen for public use by Memorial Weekend 2026, depending on conditions. If lake levels return sooner than the end of May, the date could be moved up. STay tuned to the Town News on this website for a timeline for lake access for residents and property owners in the coming weeks.
Fishery Recovery Remains a Priority
While this milestone is significant, we recognize the recoverable impacts Hurricane Helene has had on Lake Lure’s fishery. Improving our fish habitat remains a priority. The Town is utilizing recycled Christmas trees to create fish habitats throughout the lake. This effort is already underway, and long-term ecological recovery will continue to be guided by professional fishery studies, with the next one scheduled for May 2026.

Upcoming Events Signal a Return to Normalcy
As we move forward, several upcoming events reflect Lake Lure’s continued recovery and resilience:
- Collegiate Rowing Teams Returning
Collegiate rowing teams will return for spring break training in late February and early March, representing schools from across the United States and Ontario, Canada. While the lake will not yet be open for general public use, these teams will be permitted under special approval. Read more here. - Rumble 2026 at Rumbling Bald
The Carolina Climbers Coalition will host Rumble 2026 in early March, their 10th annual celebration of climbing access at Rumbling Bald. A Lake Lure property owner and endurance athlete is planning a marathon swim around the perimeter of the lake just before it officially opens. More details will be shared soon about this inspiring event as we get closer to the date, but her goals are to raise awareness to the lake reopening, to bring attention to the quality of the water, and to rase funds for first responders.
