Collegiate Rowing in Lake Lure
A Premier Winter Training Home for Collegiate Rowing
When winter limits training opportunities across much of the country, Lake Lure delivers what competitive rowing programs need most: consistency.
With mild winter and early spring temperatures, calm waters with minimal boat traffic, and a full three-mile stretch ideal for sustained pieces and high-quality practices, Lake Lure provides the reliable conditions coaches depend on during critical preseason preparation.
Local athletes row year-round in the quiet early morning hours when the lake is open. From February through early April, the lake traditionally becomes a seasonal home for collegiate programs conducting their annual spring training camps. The combination of dependable conditions, natural beauty, and rowing-friendly access creates an environment where athletes can focus, train, and perform at their best.
Collegiate Rowing Returns to Lake Lure
We are pleased to share that collegiate rowing teams will soon return to Lake Lure for spring training.
These teams have received special permission to use the lake and will operate under close supervision during their time here. Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure is coordinating their visit and hosting the teams this year.
It will be an inspiring sight to see rowers gliding across the water as some of the first vessels to return to our beloved lake. The Town of Lake Lure is honored to support their return and the continued partnership with collegiate rowing programs.
We are proud to have welcomed teams from:
Alabama • Georgia • New York • North Carolina • Ohio • Pennsylvania • Tennessee • Vermont • Washington, DC • West Virginia • Ontario, Canada
We look forward to hosting returning programs in 2026 and welcoming new teams seeking a competitive edge for the season ahead.
Lake Status
The Town of Lake Lure and local businesses remain open and warmly welcome visitors. However, the lake itself remains closed to all unauthorized personnel during this recovery period to ensure public safety. Access is limited to approved and supervised use only. Town officials will be sharing a timeline for lake access for residents and property owners in the coming weeks.
Reopening Outlook
Town officials will announce reopening dates as soon as a confirmed timeline is available. At this time, there is hope that Lake Lure and Lake Lure Beach may reopen by Memorial Weekend in May 2026. If the lake refills more quickly than anticipated, that timeline may be adjusted. Town officials will be sharing a timeline for allowing lake access for the general public in the coming weeks.
