TOGETHER WE RISE!

Lake Lure is currently at 975.5 Mean Sea Level (MSL), approximately 15 feet below full pond at the current time. The lake began refilling on 2/6/26 when the lake level was 974.2 MSL.
Town officials are pleased to report that the project to replace the seals on the Tainter gates has been finalized. The Tainter gates are the mechanism that allows Lake Levels to be controlled. The photo above shows the Tainter Gates on 2/13/26 with a lake level is 975.5.
Together, we will rise from the devastation of Hurricane Helene and Lake Lure will be better than ever!
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO REFILL THE LAKE
Town officials emphasize that refilling Lake Lure will be a slow and carefully managed process. The lake level cannot be raised by more than approximately one foot per day, and progress will depend heavily on rainfall and weather conditions.
“Today is an extremely important step forward in our recovery,” Mayor Pritchett noted. “While we cannot yet confirm exactly when the lake will return to full pond, this marks a major turning point for Lake Lure.” Although the Town cannot guarantee a timeline, it is hoped the lake may be able to reopen for public use by Memorial Weekend 2026, depending on conditions.

THE LAKE IS NOT OPEN FOR PUBLIC USE AT THIS TIME
The Town of Lake Lure and all businesses are open and welcoming visitors; however, the lake itself remains closed to all unauthorized personnel.
- The lake is not open for public use and only authorized contractors and staff may access the Lake.
- Currently, accessing the lake is not safe due to the lower lake levels.
- Do not enter the lake or the lakebed for everyone's safety, and to avoid fines.
- Town officials will reopen the lake when it returns to full pond.
WHEN WILL THE LAKE AND LAKE LURE BEACH REOPEN?
The Town of Lake Lure remains hopeful that we will be able to reopen the lake and the Lake Lure Beach in the late May 2026. The target date for opening Lake Lure to the public is Memorial Weekend 2026. You may read the Town's Press Release on refilling the lake here.
SHORELINE DEBRIS - APPROVED IN THE NICK OF TIME!
- The Town of Lake Lure is pleased to advise that the state has approved the shoreline debris removal process through the North Carolina State Mission Assigned Recovery Task (SMART) Program. The program will begin in the coming weeks. Crews will be picking up debris around the lake and on the shoreline as the lake continues to rise.
LAKE WATER QUALITY
Please see the attached water sample results from January 2026. We are pleased to report that the latest results are all within acceptable limits.
You may review the updates spreadsheet, which illustrates all the water sample data received by the Town of Lake Lure.
This data is current through 1/7/26.

COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING UPDATE

The Town of Lake Lure began the comprehensive planning process in the summer of 2025, in partnership with the Foothills Regional Commission. Since that time, we have held three in person public input sessions. One was a virtual session, one was in a traditional format at "The Landings", our temporary Town Hall, and one was held in a open Round Table Forum at the same location.
We plan to hold one more public input session on 2/25/26 at 10:00 at The Landings. Please make plans to attend!
Additionally, two focus groups have been held. One was with the Lake Advisory Board and one with the Parks and Recreation Board. A third focus group session is being held with the Planning and Zoning Board. Two more focus groups will be held following this one with residents.
-
An online public input survey has been shared in various forums. 580 of Lake Lure's residents have completed the survey. The Foothills Regional Commission advises that this is a very good response rate compared with other municipalities. It is difficult to get high survey responses these days, but for a Town of our size they are very pleased. The vast majority of responses are from full and part-time residents.
-
If you have not taken the Comprehensive Planning Survey, the deadline has been extended to allow for additional submissions.
Please click here to take the survey.
- A report will be prepared in the spring compiling all of the public input later in 2026. This report will be widely shared once it is published.

IN THE NEWS
The following is a summary of some of the relevant news coverage since the last report.
- Lake Lure: Not lakeless for long: After a year and a half since Hurricane Helene, Lake Lure is on track for a normal summer. Watch the newscast here.
-
Updated: 10:52 PM EST Feb 11, 2026, Peyton Furtado, Anchor
LAKE LURE, N.C. — Lake Lure's lake is getting fuller by the day. The Western North Carolina town and vacation spot lowered its water as crews removed Hurricane Helene debris. Now it's counting down the days to a normal summer.
The Army Corps of Engineers removed 1.1 million tons of debris, and crews are working on marinas and sea walls ahead of the summer. Now begins the next phase.
"The water gates, which are the gates on the dam that let the water go through the seals, had to be replaced around them because they were damaged, and the lake had to be at 15 feet below full pond in order for us to do that," said Mayor Carol Pritchett. "That was finished last week, so that was perfect. So, then we can begin raising the lake up again."
The water is rising up to a foot a day to not put a strain on the dam, relying on rain instead of the river.
"So, it'll continue on downstream through the dam," Pritchett said. "So, we need the extra rain that just comes down here and Lake Lure."
Based on typical weather patterns, Lake Lure will have a full lake by Memorial Day weekend.
"Well, it's critical. I don't think a lot of our business owners could have stood it because, truly, usually from Memorial Day to Labor Day, that's when they make the preponderance of their money," Pritchett said.
Jeff Geisler manages Rumbling Bald, a resort with homes, golf courses, and, of course, lake access.
"It was about a 50% reduction in visitors," Geisler said. "We saw a lot of people come. And just because they wanted to support the area."
After nearly two years, Geisler said his and other businesses in the region are grateful to have a normal summer.
We haven't popped the champagne cork yet, but we know the lake's getting full. We've been waiting for this day since September 25th of 2024," he said.
As people book their vacations, the main message from Lake Lure is: come on in! The water (will be) fine.

Town of Lake Lure starts to refill lake after Hurricane Helene: Historic flooding during Helene destroyed Lake Lure and most of the town. Watch the newscast here.
- ABC, Channel 11, Monday, February 9, 2026 10:51AM
LAKE LURE, N.C. (WTVD) -- There is more progress being made in western North Carolina's recovery from Hurricane Helene.
The Town of Lake Lure announced it is starting to refill the lake.
The mayor said they hope the work is done by Memorial Day so it is ready for the holiday weekend and summer tourism.
Historic flooding during Helene destroyed Lake Lure and most of the town.
LAKE LURE, N.C. — The Town of Lake Lure began refilling its namesake lake Thursday, marking the first step toward restoring the water body to full capacity since Hurricane Helene.
The town is working to return the lake to full pond at 990.5 mean sea level. Mayor Carol Pritchett said the progress resulted from collaboration with FEMA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, AshBritt Environmental, Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure and contractors. Watch the newscast here.

Lake Lure to refill after Helene, businesses feel hopeful: BPR News | By Jose Sandoval, Published February 11, 2026 at 5:57 PM EST

Lake Lure had to be drained 20 feet after Hurricane Helene so engineers could clean out all the silt and grime. The town is slowly refilling the lake, hoping it will be ready for business Memorial Day weekend.
The Town of Lake Lure hopes to welcome back tourists, boaters and swimmers this summer as officials begin refilling the lake 15 months after Hurricane Helene struck Western North Carolina.
Town officials announced the refilling Feb. 6, marking the first step toward restoring it to its full level of 990.5 feet above mean sea level.
Helene dumped 15 inches of rain into Lake Lure, flooding it with sand, silt and debris that washed down the Rocky Broad River, according to the Citizen Times.
The damage left behind from the storm means the process to return to normal has been slow and steady. In October 2024, officials lowered the lake by up to 20 feet so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could remove debris and sediment, Lake Lure Mayor Carol Pritchett said.
To lower the levels of the lake, officials had to maneuver the tainter gates, radial floodgates that allow dams and canal locks to control water flow. The floodgates are located 12 feet under the Lake Lure dam.
“ The most that we have ever been able to lower the lake since it was built in 1926 is 12 feet by using the tainter gates,” Pritchett told BPR.

The Army Corps completed the cleanup of the lake about a year after Helene. Pritchett said that the federal agency removed 1.1 million tons of sediment from the water.
“One thing that you have to know is that we are only allowed by (North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality) DEQ to increase the level of the lake by one foot a day because doing it more quickly than that would put too much stress on the dam,” Pritchett said. Read more here.

MORSE PARK, SHORELINE STABILIZATION, AND DREDGING

Shoreline: The next step in the restoration process in and around Morse Park is securing the shoreline.
- The shoreline around Morse Park will be armored with riprap in the coming weeks.
- Riprap is large, angular stones that will help prevent erosion by absorbing the force of waves and water, protecting the soil underneath, and stabilizing the bank.
- The expanse of low lying dirt beyond the banks will be underwater once the lake levels resume to full pond.
- Dredging is taking place near this area
Dredging: Mechanical dredging is taking place to prevent future sedimentation build up in a small section of the riverbed near Morse Park.
Park grounds: The mound of dirt in Morse Park is being used to level out the grounds in the area to minimize future drainage issues. Once this process is complete beautification and grass planting will begin.
Next Steps for Morse Park: The next steps will be to utilize input and information from the Comprehensive Plan to develop a Morse Park Master Plan so additional amenities can be added based on resident preferences.
