NEXT STEPS FOR WASHBURN MARINA

062426 Marina Construction with Fencing

  • Marina Stationary Docks: Decking on the stationary docks is now complete, and fencing was recently completed as shown above.

  • Lake Lure Tours Boat Slips: Lake Lure Tours Boat slips have been attached.

  • Certificate of Occupancy: A Certificate of Occupancy is required before any of these facilities are utilized.  The Town is currently working with Rutherford County Building Inspections to obtain a phased Certificate of Occupancy (CO), which would allow these completed elements to become operational while remaining project components are finalized.

  • Fuel Tank: The fueling tank installation remains delayed despite staff efforts to expedite delivery.  It is anticipated to arrive in July but a date is uncertain at this time.  Once installed, this will represent the next phase for which the Town will seek an additional CO.

  • Floating Boardwalk: The floating marina boardwalk remains on schedule for substantial completion by July 17, 2026.  Following that milestone, the contractor will shift focus to the installation of courtesy docks near Pool Creek Park.

  • Hot Docks: Replacement of the hot docks (for temporary docking while loading and unloading) is also currently underway.

  • Cameras/Signage: Cameras and signage are being added to the Washburn Marina.

  • Temporary Marina Building: A temporary marina building will be installed to allow Lake Lure Tours to resume operations at the Marina while design work continues on the permanent replacement facility. The projects are near completion, and a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be planned once the project is complete.

The full Marina and Boardwalk reconstruction remains on track for mid-July completion.

Here's the background information on the timeline.

  • To keep all components of the waterfront improvements moving forward in a fiscally responsible, timely, and coordinated manner, the Town is working with the same contractor for the courtesy and hot dock work.  This approach minimizes cost, avoids additional delays, and ensures continuity across all related project elements as they are already mobilized in the area and familiar with site conditions.
  • The Town was initially required to work through a lengthy FEMA obligation process that took more than a year to complete.
  • The project was formally obligated on January 28th of this year, and until that point federal participation could not be considered certain.
  • The Town moved forward with project preparation in advance of obligation to avoid additional delays.
  • The project was advertised for bids in September 2025, awarded in October 2025, and the contract was finalized in November 2025.
  • The Town could not responsibly proceed to full implementation without reasonable confidence that federal funding would ultimately be secured.
  • In addition, lake cleanup efforts and drawdown conditions affected the project schedule, as many portions of the work could not occur until the lake returned to full pond.
  • Based on discussions with multiple contractors and experience with similar projects, a July 2026 completion date was consistently identified as realistic and achievable.
  • As a result, the contract has always included a completion date of July 17.

KEEPING LAKE LURE CLEAN - LAKE DEBRIS PICK UP

The Town of Lake Lure has resumed responsibility for lake debris cleanup operations.

Under this program, Town staff will collect floating lake debris from coves and around boat docks. For the first six months, pickups will occur on Wednesdays during the 1st and 3rd weeks of each month. After this period, service will transition to the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Lake conditions, debris volumes, staffing, and program effectiveness will be monitored throughout this initial phase, and the schedule may be adjusted as necessary to respond to changing conditions. Enter a work order here.

RIVER SIDE DEBRIS BOOM UPDATE

The Town is actively working with engineers on the design and replacement of a debris boom at the river inlet to the lake.

  • This is a significant-cost project, and while we began working on it as soon as FEMA obligated the project, we were not able to move forward with funding until that obligation occurred.
  • This project is more complex than a standard installation due to the significant changes in the river channel and lake mouth following recent storm events.
  • As a result, the boom must be custom-designed to fit current conditions and function effectively, which requires detailed engineering analysis and coordination.
  • While this has extended the timeline, please know that the Town is diligently working through the design process to ensure a long-term, reliable solution.
  • Our goal is to have the new boom in place as soon as possible.

We appreciate your patience as we move this important project forward and will continue to keep the community informed as progress is made.

FISHERY UPDATE

Lake Lure's Fishery Recovery Remains a Priority!

Fish May 2026

MORSE PARK

The remaining sediment in Morse Park will be used to raise the elevation to address drainage issues. Once the leveling has taken place, grass will be planted throughout the area.

The next steps in Morse Park will be to utilize input and information from the Comprehensive Plan to develop a Morse Park Master Plan so additional amenities can be added, based on resident preferences.

A second pile of debris can be seen across the river from Morse Park.  This sedimentation will be removed by contractors working for the Town of Lake Lure but at some point in the future based on funding priorities.

COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING UPDATE

The Town of Lake Lure began the comprehensive planning process in the summer of 2025, in partnership with the Foothills Regional Commission. Foothills Regional Commission is working to finalize the Town’s Comprehensive Plan.

  • The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee met on June 16th to review the latest draft, during which a few additional edits were made.
  • The plan will next be presented to the Zoning and Planning Board for review at its July meeting for input.
  • Following that, it will be reviewed by Town Council during the July work session and action meeting.
  • A public hearing will be held prior to adoption to receive public input on the proposed plan.
  • This meeting is scheduled for 8/5/26 at 5:00 pm.
  • Please make plans to attend this meeting.

  • 10 Best Small Towns In North Carolina For A Crowd-Free Summer

North Carolina's most well-known barrier-island beaches and mountain spots absorb most summer visitors, leaving quieter alternatives for those willing to look. The towns on this list have walkable waterfronts, trail systems, and swimming holes which hold their own. Beaufort runs ferries out to Cape Lookout and the wild horses of Shackleford Banks. Oriental's sailing community makes for a laid-back entrance to waterside living. The ten North Carolina towns ahead carry their own brand of peaceful summer living.

In Hickory Nut Gorge, the community centers on a 720-acre highland reservoir. Because the area remains in post-Helene recovery, verify shore access, beach operations, boat tours, and trail openings before planning a full day around them. When open, the beach and water park offers a sandy swimming area, waterslides, picnic spots, and views across the reservoir. Lake Lure Tours is known for narrated cruises past coves, cliffs, and filming sites from Dirty Dancing. Nearby Chimney Rock State Park adds the Hickory Nut Falls Trail, which leads to a 404-foot waterfall when the route is open. For a gentler stop, the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge area and Morse Park provide garden paths, open space, and scenery near the reservoir and Rocky Broad River. Read more here.

  • Proposed Lake Lure budget includes property tax rate increase, By Chris Lavender Daily Courier Staff, Jun 2, 2026

LAKE LURE — A proposed budget for the town of Lake Lure includes a property tax rate increase and funding to help hire more firefighters.

The proposed budget, if approved, would raise the town’s property tax rate from 35.7 cents to 37.7 cents per $100 of assessed value.

A public hearing is scheduled for 5 p.m., June 9 at 920 Buffalo Creek Road. Town Manager Olivia Stewman said Tuesday, the proposed budget for fiscal 2026-27 is $10 million, which is $700,000 more than was what was approved for the current fiscal year.

“We feel good about the proposed budget,” Stewman said. “It will further support our public safety and provide funding for a new first-out fire engine. We will also see staffing increases in the fire department with funding from grants.”

Stewman said the town plans to apply for funding through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant to help hire new firefighters. If awarded the grant, the town would hire four additional firefighters for the department.

“The grant would fully fund these positions initially with the town’s required cost share increasing each year of the grant,” Stewman said. “The proposed budget increase would help support the town’s share of those costs as they phase in over time.

  • The 10 Cleanest Lakes In North Carolina With Crystal-Clear, Refreshing Waters, By Joe Orovic  June 27, 2026. Rated among the cleanest lakes in the country — and some located in protected natural areas — these crystal-clear waters are about as good as it gets.

North Carolina's natural bounty cuts across genres, from waterfalls galore to lush mountains and a vaunted ocean coastline. Somewhere within that mix of lucre await lakes with crystal-clear, refreshing waters, and like the Tarheel State's other natural gems, its lakes contain multitudes.

This list of North Carolina's cleanest lakes includes a broad cast of characters. If you're looking for the state's crown jewel, look no further than White Lake. For the lake equivalent of a Swiss Army knife, Fontana Lake fits the bill. There's even a nearly civilization-free Eden to be found at Lake Nantahala.                          Lake Lure: A lake fed by a series of rapids takes the easy road to crystal clear waters. Resting in Hickory Nut Gorge, Lake Lure boasts 720 acres of pristine water. Long bays and an island mix with a panorama of green hillsides and Chimney Rock State Park in the distance, all of which combine to create a unique destination.  The lake's designated beach gets frequent praise for its soft sand and inviting water. You don't have to swim to enjoy it, though. The surrounding area offers opportunities to fish, paddle, hike, grab a bite, camp, and go birding.  Read more here.

  • Lake Lure town hall repair estimate: $1.8 million, By Chris Lavender Daily Courier Staff, Jun 23, 2026 Updated Jun 23, 2026

LAKE LURE — The price to repair a building formerly used for Lake Lure Town Hall and damaged by Hurricane Helene flooding would likely cost about $1.8 million based on an estimate provided by a general contractor.

The building on Memorial Highway has been vacant since September 2024 due to the damage caused by flooding. Several feet of mud were left behind inside the building after flood waters receded. The town’s administration staff and police department have been shuffled to other locations to conduct daily business and currently operate at The Landings of Lake Lure on Buffalo Creek Road. This site was formerly used as an assisted living facility. Read more here.

  • We held a Pride festival in our small, conservative NC town. By George Carter Updated June 12, 2026
